We are Bec and Craig, the husband and wife duo behind multi award-winning Ginny Pig Distillery.
Two former nurses who swapped scrubs for stills! Today, instead of bandages, we obsess over botanicals! Where did our distilling story begin? As a fanciful dream to infuse the iconic spicy notes of a hot cross bun into Bec’s favourite beverage - gin. So in between shiftwork and (very little) sleep - all from the ‘cosy comfort’ of our suburban garage - we embarked on a self-taught journey to do just that. When the result was a hit amongst family and friends, we knew we’d struck gold. Our famous Hot Cross Bun gin was born. From here, our path was clear, and every spare moment was devoted to perfecting our new-found passion. Bec went on to participate in Adelaide University’s ‘Fundamentals of Spirit Production’ course, and together we spent countless hours blending, tasting, planning and dreaming big.
Where we are today
Fast forward to today, and - from our (considerably more spacious) new home base in Tooperang on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula - we now focus on producing our artisanal gins full time. With the help of ‘Harriett’, our small but mighty copper alembic still, we painstakingly fine-tune blends, before calling on ‘Charlie’, our 120L copper pot still, to recreate our favourites on a larger scale. All under the watchful eye of our distillery dogs Murphy & Pippa, of course. Offering a vibrant range that covers everything from traditional to unconventional - each new gin variety is created with the same determination and dedication as our first. From sweet to savoury and everything in between, we aim to create something for everyone.
We couldn’t have been prouder when our flagship Botanical Gin took out the 'Best in Class Overall Gin' title at the prestigious 2023 San Francisco World Spirit Awards. Persistence and patience certainly pays off. Even with this accolade tucked away in the pool room, we won’t be slowing down. Innovation and experimentation is what drives us and we’ve got a notebook chock-full of fantastic new ideas to prove it. We love playing around with flavour and drawing inspiration from our customers or, as we like to call them, our ‘Ginny Pigs’. In fact, it’s likely the unique blends you’ll find on our shelf were dreamed up over a cheeky G&T and some lively banter across the bar..... that’s just how we like it. So next time you’re in McLaren Vale and searching for a gin tasting with a difference, pop on in! You’ll also catch us at the local Farmers Markets on a weekend, or at our temporary Distillery Door in the McLaren Vale Visitors Centre (watch this space!) We hope you’ll swing by!
